DID YOU KNOW A HURRICANE ONCE WIPED AN ENTIRE ISLAND OFF THE MAP? || Back to top

oh yes i'm not lying.

August 24 1874, a category 2 devastating hurricane wiped off the entire Hog Island.

How it was discovered years later? Garbage at the beach.

Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale: Categories?

Cat 1 hurricane : 74-95 mph
Minimal damage.

Cat 2 hurricane: 96-110 mph
Flooding starts to get serious.

Cat 3 hurricane: 111-130 mph
Structural flooding to small residences and utility buildings, flooding may destroy smaller structures.

Cat 4 hurricane: 131-155 mph
Extensive damage with some complete roof structure failure on small residences.

Cat 5 hurricane: 155 mph+
Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Massive evacuation of residential areas may be required.

If you think Hog Island hurricane was bad, well. There's more

In 1938 Long Island Express, a low cat 4 hurricane killed 600 people.

How are hurricanes formed?

HERE'S A REALLY HELPFUL PIC FROM
http://www.weatherwizkids.com/hurricane1.htm

I wanted to write a paragraph on how hurricanes are formed.
BUT I KNOW YOU PEOPLE ARE TOO LAZY TO READ. SO.

What are the scariest hurricanes to have started on Earth?

  1. 1928, The Okeechobee Hurricane
Puerto Rico was hit with the first recorded hurricane to reach Category 5.
    Death count: 1836
    Damage in $: $1 billion 2006 USD

  2. 1900, The Galveston Hurricane
A Category 4 storm made landfall on the city of Galveston Hurricane.
    Death count: 8000-12,000

Many more but i'm too lazy to tell u.

INTERESTING FACT:
WHAT DO MOST AMERICANS BUY BEFORE A HURRICANE?

walmart sold most:
POP-TARTS AND BEER.

take that organic vegetables! lol.

Thinking about expensive hurricanes... here's one to think about

Hurricane Ivan in 2004 caused a whooping $13 billion worth of damage in the United States.

thats like... losing 500 winning lottery tickets. oh my god.

WHY are hurricanes named like people?

so far we have like Katrina... Ivan... lol.
BUT WHY.

To help people identify storms and track them as they move across the ocean.

Then u ask, why must identify them? because...

There can be more than one hurricane at a time and without naming them, we could get confused and which storm we're talking about.

Who decides the name?

Hurricanes names are chosen from a list selected by the World Meteorological Organization.

The Atlantic is assigned six lists of names, with one list used each year.
Every sixth year, the first list begins again.

Each name on the list starts with a different letter, for example, the name of the very first hurricane of the season starts with the letter A, the next starts with the letter B, and so on.

Often when an unusually destructive hurricane hits, that hurricane's name is retired and never used again (eg. Katrina, Mitch, etc).

Is your name among the currently used or retired hurricane names?

The letters "Q", "U", "X", "Y" and "Z", however, are not used.

WHY U ASK?

The letters Q, U, X, Y and Z are skipped because not enough names start with those letters.

good answer, no? not joking.

Interesting fact:
WHO EVACUATES FAST-EST?

Sharks.
In 2001, right before tropical storm Gabrielle hit, a lot of sharks were electronically tracked to have moved to another area very quickly.

wow. wish i had a built in sensor. oh well sharks sorta have 6th sense anyway.

Extraterrestrial cyclones?

of course have lah.

Jupiter's residential hurricane, The Great Red Spot, is a persistent anticyclonic storm of poisonous ammonia.

It has lasted for at least 177 years and possibly as long as 342 years or more.
AND. Is big & strong enough to swallow Earth twice.

wah.

last piece of advise: when experts say leave now, leave now.

i love discovery channel
