Random great leaders having a go at each other. || Back to top

If Christianity had a chance to take root in chinese soil, it was blighted by what become known as the Rites Controversy. In an exchange of letter with Rome, (Emperor)Kangxi explained that the traditional rituals were of secular nature.

However, Pope Clement XI would not compromise, and in 1715 decreed that pure forms of european christianity be observed, and forbade any chinese rites such as worship at family shrines.

Under pain of death, the missionaries were to abide by this ruling from the holy see. Kangxi's answer to this dictum was exquisitely patronizing.

All that can be said about this decree is that one asks oneself how the
Europeans, ignorant and contemptible as they are, presume to deliver judgement
on the lofty teachings of the Chinese,
seeing that they [in europe] know neither
their manners, their customs, nor their letters... it is not advisable to allow
the Europeans to proclaim their law in China.
They must be forbidden to speak
about it; and in this way many difficulties and embarrassments will be avoided.

All of Metteo Ricci's careful laying of foundations was undone. In 1717 decrees were issued which effectively banned the activities of Catholic Missionaries, although Kangxi left enforcing them to his successor.

Well, all i can about that is... what is lofty?

Dictionary.com says:
1. Of imposing height.
2. Elevated in character; exalted.
3. Affecting grandness; pompous.
4. Arrogant; haughty.

Well, children, today u have learnt a new word, called lofty. And that Emperor Kangxi is a good politician. Hahah.

In my truest humblest opinion, i feel that its wrong to try and impose ideas to the majority in a foreign land, although the Pope was trying to impose pure Christianity on his followers. Supposedly in China, it is rude to not take part in the rituals, etc. So yeah, it got banned.

Anyways. Its almost as wrong as America granting amnesty to Japanese war criminals.

Japanese Lt. Gen. Shiro Iishi, commander of the infamous Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army, and his men had received total amnesty following the fall of Japan in 1945.

“Iishi and his colleagues received immunity from prosecution and in exchange they provided a great deal of information to U. S. authorities,” the letter said.

In particular, Cooper said, they provided the results of “field tests” in which hundreds of thousands of civilians in China and eastern Russia were exposed to and died from deadly germs such as anthrax and the plague.

Oh wow. There were thousands of people who were tortured to death that aren't Americans, who are they to grant amnesty?

Superpower of the world huh? Humanity is a fallen race, indeed.
